Division types in Hearts of Iron IV

Which division belongs on the line, which one punches through, which one goes to mountains or the shore, and which one you never train in the queue — you hang it on occupation. Roles in outline: infantry, motorized infantry, tanks, cavalry, special forces and garrison.

Section overview

A division type is not “an icon in the designer”. It is a job in the war. The same country holds the front with infantry, rips the line with tanks, closes the pocket with motorized infantry and suppresses Resistance with a separate garrison template. The question is not “which division is best”. It is “what are you solving right now”.

What is inside

Where to start

  1. Infantry — if you do not know how to fill tiles. Without it most countries cannot hold a line.
  2. Tanks and motorized infantry — once the front exists and you need to punch through and stop the enemy slipping the pocket.
  3. Mountaineers / Marines / Paratroopers — only if you have mountains, a landing or a drop. Then open the special forces cap tab immediately.
  4. Cavalry and garrison — when the question is not “how to fight”, but “how not to burn the army on the rear and on national focuses conditions”.

From practice: first put infantry on combat width. A pretty tank corps with no line around it is a hole the AI walks into. Special forces without a regular army slam into the battalion ceiling.

How to use this section: open the tab for the type → grab the role and the usual mistakes → go to the full article if you need templates, micro and numbers. Combat stats and the designer “in figures” sit next door, not here.

Quick map: which tab to hit

Which tabs to open for which job
Job Open first
Hold the front cheap Infantry
Need to close a pocket in time Motorized infantry
The line will not budge Tanks
Need a paper army or a cheap rear Cavalry → Garrison
Mountains and hills Mountaineers → Special forces cap
Landings, rivers, marshes Marines → Special forces cap
Drop in the rear / an island Paratroopers → Special forces cap
Partisans eat stockpiles, and you hate parking real divisions Garrison
