Cavalry Role and Tactics in Hearts of Iron IV
About cavalry on the map: weaker than tanks in a real war, but people spam it for abuse — pad the army for a check, one-battalion garrisons, and mass division conversion.
What cavalry is
A cavalry division is a division on the map whose template has cavalry battalions. Available from day one, no special forces tree: that is why people love it for early tricks while factories are still weak.
Mechanically cavalry eats infantry equipment — 120 rifles per battalion (infantry takes 100). There is no separate “horse” resource in the game; when people say “spam cavalry”, they mean a sudden deploy of cavalry so they can convert them into real divisions later and skip the limit on how many divisions you can train at once.
One battalion: combat width 2, 1000 manpower, HP 25, organization 70, speed 0.6, suppression 2. Supply use is 0.06, same as infantry. In combat this is not tanks: no armor and no hard attack; against a fortified front it is the same infantry, just overpriced.
Why you need cavalry
Honest answer: you barely need it for a real war. Without cavalry you finish the campaign on infantry and tanks. You keep it for jobs where quality does not matter — quantity, raise speed, and a cheap rear do.
Classic example — Anschluss as Germany. The focus wants the army bigger than Austria’s. Cheap cavalry divisions with rifles in stock are a fast way to paint those numbers without building a real army.
- Pad the army for a check. Cavalry trains from day one; each battalion puts 1000 men into army stats. Raised from the stockpile — check done, then you can disband or convert into real divisions.
- One-battalion garrisons. Template “1 cavalry battalion”, combat width 2, suppression 2 — cheaper and better for occupation than full infantry. That is how you suppress resistance in the rear.
- Stockpile equipment — convert a pack. Train a lot of cavalry, say 100 divisions, then convert them all at once into infantry or the divisions you actually want.
That is the meta point of cavalry: not “elite horse”, a cheap tool for numbers and garrisons. On a front against tanks that army folds — and that is fine, it is just expensive infantry with speed.
Main role of cavalry
Drop the flavor text from the unit description and the main role of cavalry is not combat, it is service. It plugs holes in manpower, the rear, and focus conditions. You do not hold it on the line instead of tanks — different economy.
| Role | What it does on the map | Fit? |
|---|---|---|
| Pad the army | Quickly adds men and equipment to army stats — for Anschluss and similar checks | Yes — typical abuse |
| Garrison “1 cavalry battalion” | Cheap occupation, suppresses resistance | Yes |
| Convert into real divisions | Train many 1-battalion cavalry divisions, then convert them all into real divisions | Yes |
| Front breakthrough | Hit a fortified line instead of tanks | No — no armor, no breakthrough |
| Main army | Replace infantry and tanks on the whole front | No — pricier than infantry, weaker than tanks |
Simple scheme: cavalry is for numbers, garrisons, and the stockpile; infantry and tanks are for war. Mix them and you get a pretty division counter and a sad front.
How effective cavalry is
In combat cavalry is weak: +20% rifle cost, longer training, and it does not punch armor or give breakthrough like tanks. Organization 70 against 60 on regular infantry.
Where cavalry “works”
- Anschluss and similar thresholds. Quickly pads the army for a focus check.
- Garrisons. One-battalion template: tiny combat width, suppression 2.
- Stockpile → mass raise. Pile rifles — deploy a pack of divisions.
- Early game without trucks. Speed 6.4 before motorization — a crutch, not an army.
Where cavalry is useless
- Front line against tanks. No armor, no hard attack — they get wiped.
- As the army core. Extra rifles on every battalion.
- After motorization. Motorized infantry and tanks do it better; the AI drops cavalry.
- Mountains and jungle. Terrain penalties eat an already weak fight.
Measure cavalry not by front wins, but by how many problems it solves off the map: closed a check, held the rear, saved on garrisons. For war, look at tanks.
Cavalry and tanks: comparison
Tanks and cavalry live in different boxes. Tanks are the war: breakthrough, armor, hard attack, pressure on a sector. Cavalry is a side tool: cheap raise, garrisons, padding the army. Comparing them in a fight is pointless — different jobs.
| Stat | Cavalry | Tank division |
|---|---|---|
| Why you take it | Abuse, garrisons, pad the army | Breakthrough, encirclements, war |
| Battalion cost | 120 rifles, no fuel | 50 medium tank chassis + fuel |
| Battalion organization | 70 | 10 — you need motorized infantry in the template |
| Battalion HP | 25 | 2 |
| Battalion training | 120 days | 180 days |
| Supply use | 0.06 | 0.25 |
| On the front | Weak, goes stale fast | The main punch |
Do not expect cavalry to be “cheap tanks”. Different buttons, different menus: cavalry is stockpile and numbers, tanks are the line.
Typical cavalry abuses
Below is why people actually field cavalry. This is not war tactics — it is tricks against the game’s rules.
Cavalry → real divisions
You train a lot of 1-battalion cavalry divisions, then convert them all at once into infantry or other real divisions. A battalion eats 120 rifles — count the pack first.
A check and padding the army
Quickly raise army size for national focuses. Example: as Germany, pad army size so you can run Anschluss.
Garrison “1 cavalry battalion”
- Template of one cavalry battalion.
- Suppression 2 — better than infantry (1.5) on the same job.
- You put it on garrison so you do not burn a lot of equipment on the rear.
What not to do
- Do not build the main army out of cavalry “because it is fast” — pricier than infantry, not much better.
- Do not keep abuse cavalry on the front after the check — disband or convert into real divisions.
- Do not mix a garrison “1 cavalry battalion” with a fighting division — it will fold on the attack.
Bottom line
Cavalry in HoI4 is not a punch, it is a support template: pad the army, pass a size check, park cheap garrisons, convert a lot of divisions at once. Infantry and tanks fight the war; you keep cavalry only as long as that trick is needed — and not a day longer.
