Weapons you can get within the first few minutes after the crash. Crafted from basic materials or found in easily accessible spots with little to no resistance. Perfect for surviving on the surface and handling your first cannibal encounters.
Crafted in inventory: 2 sticks + rope + duct tape
A fantastic choice for early survival — cheap, available right from the start, and lets you take down enemies without putting yourself at risk. There are three arrow types: stone arrows (hand-crafted, 40 damage), printed arrows (made at a 3D printer, 60 damage), and carbon fiber arrows (the most powerful at 70 damage, but extremely rare). On the surface, the bow destroys everything that moves. Nearly useless in caves — your flashlight gets put away when you draw the bowstring, making aimed shots impossible.

✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
The early arrow shortage is solved with the 3D printer in the entertainment bunker or the firefighter axe bunker. Print an extra 20 arrows — combined with stone arrows you'll have 40, which lasts a good while. Always carry flares for unexpected cave trips.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Keep enemies at range and aim for weak spots — head, legs, lower back. Leg shots cripple the enemy for about 6 seconds (they drop to one knee). That's your window to pepper them with arrows or finish them with a melee weapon. Against multiple targets, shoot each one in the legs to keep them from swarming you. If an enemy charges — dodge sideways and keep firing. The bow dominates everything on the surface, but in caves, bring a melee weapon or a gun with a flashlight.
Found on the surface — can be grabbed in the first 30–60 minutes with no combat
The modern axe is both the best tool and best weapon for the early game. It has excellent block (80%) and high damage. It's a bit on the slow side, but that's offset by the "power swing — immediate block" tactic. In combat, it frequently chops off limbs, especially with power attacks. Upgrades with 6 solafite, boosting damage from 32.7 to 49.5 — a massive jump. Chops trees, making it essential for base building.

✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Upgrade the axe with 6 solafite at the first opportunity — the damage jump is massive (32.7 to 49.5). It's one of the most efficient solafite upgrades in the game. Keep this as your primary weapon — it handles both mutants and cannibals with ease.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Stick to the "power swing — block — repeat" rhythm. Land one solid power hit, immediately raise your block, and wait for the enemy to finish their attack chain. Then dodge and power swing again. Against groups, focus all damage on one target at a time. Unarmored cannibals often lose a limb after just 1–2 power swings — once that happens, they're out of the fight for good.
Crafted in inventory: 2 sticks + duct tape + knife
The spear is an amazing weapon for aggressive playstyles in the early stages. It has huge attack range — you can hit enemies without letting them get anywhere near you. Two attack modes: standard thrust and throwing. A thrown spear deals damage roughly equal to a stone arrow, and you can carry up to 5 spears at once. It doesn't sever limbs, but excels at hitting weak points — head, arms, legs. Cannot be upgraded with solafite.

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 29 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 39 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
You can pick up spears from dead spear-wielding cannibals — don't waste resources crafting extras. Spears thrown by enemies can also be looted from the ground after a fight. Always target the same limb — damage accumulates, and the enemy will eventually collapse or lose the ability to attack.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Close in to spear range — you'll hit them, they can't hit you. Stab the legs or head repeatedly in the exact same spot. After a few accurate leg hits, the enemy drops to a knee. If you're cornered or outnumbered, switch to throwing. Aim for the head or legs, then quickly retrieve the spear and finish the downed enemy.
Found on the surface — can be grabbed with no combat, same as the modern axe
The machete is a weapon for aggressive, high-speed players. It has the fastest attack speed of any melee weapon — roughly 126 hits per minute. Upgrades with 6 solafite: damage vs cannibals jumps from 15.3 to 22.9. The main downside is very short range. You have to get right in the enemy's face, which leaves you wide open. It can sever limbs, but does so rarely — far less often than axes. Cannot chop trees.
🔧 Stats
| Normal hit | 15.3 damage |
| Upgraded hit (6 solafite) | 22.9 damage |

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 20 | 14 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 27 | 18 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
The machete is for experienced players who can read combat rhythm. The short range makes it punishing for beginners — enemies will frequently interrupt your attacks. If you're not confident in your skills, stick with the modern axe — it forgives mistakes with its block. The machete demands aggression and constant movement.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Stay as mobile as possible — circle behind enemies, strike when they're not expecting it. Exploit the speed: land a quick flurry, then dodge out. Use power attacks when a cannibal is barely standing or when a mutant is stuck in a long recovery animation. Never trade hits face-to-face — with that short range, it's a death sentence.
The most accessible firearm — 9x18 ammo is the most common on the island
The pistol is a great backup weapon for the early game. It fires 9x18 rounds, the most plentiful ammo type on the island. Deals massive damage to cannibals (70 to the body), but struggles against mutants — only 12.2 body damage. 12-round magazine, full reload takes 2 seconds. If you're holding something in your left hand (like a flashlight), reload extends to 3 seconds. Upgrades with 6 solafite, but that only changes the color — damage stays the same. Can mount a laser sight, flashlight, and suppressor.
🔧 Stats

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 25 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 33 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Use the pistol only when you really need it. The ammo is common, but it's not infinite. Always keep at least 10 spare rounds or 2 full magazines on you. Attach the weapon flashlight — combined with your main flashlight, caves become significantly brighter.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Keep enemies at least 5 meters away. Always aim for the head — unarmored cannibals drop in one shot. Avoid using it against mutants unless absolutely necessary — low damage per round means you'll burn through precious ammo. The pistol shines as a last-resort weapon when you're cornered or surrounded by blind mutants. It's not meant to be your primary weapon due to ammo scarcity.
Weapons that become available after you find the shovel and clear mid-tier bunkers. This is where the first powerful firearms and upgraded early-game gear come into play. Perfect for cave clearing and serious mutant fights.
Available after getting the shovel — found in a buried bunker
The firefighter axe is an upgraded version of the modern axe and one of the best melee weapons in the game. Slightly slower than the modern axe, but with noticeably higher damage. After a solafite upgrade, damage jumps from 38.5 to 57.7 — the biggest boost of any weapon in the game. Excels at chopping limbs, especially with power attacks. Recommended as your main weapon until you find the katana. Chops trees and limbs.
🔧 Stats

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 8 | 6 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 11 | 7 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Upgrade the firefighter axe with 6 solafite at the first opportunity — the +50% damage boost is the most efficient use of solafite in the game. Use it as your primary weapon until you find the katana. Grab it as soon as you have the shovel.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Same tactic as the modern axe, but even deadlier: one clean power swing — block — repeat. Wait for the enemy to finish their attack chain, dodge, then power swing again. Don't swing wildly — stamina runs out fast. Against solo mutants: swing, block, wait out their animation, swing again. Against groups, focus damage on one target at a time.
Found in a bunker after getting the shovel — a few bolts are there too
The crossbow is a powerful ranged weapon for the mid game. Deals 100 damage to cannibals and 50 to mutants — significantly more than any bow. Uses crossbow bolts, which are extremely rare and can't be crafted. You can only carry 20 bolts at a time. Full reload takes 4 seconds, or up to 5 seconds if you're holding something in your left hand (the flashlight gets put away). Fires silently. Cannot be upgraded. Requires precision and careful bolt retrieval after every fight.

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 6 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 8 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Always retrieve your bolts after every fight — they can disappear over time, and finding new ones is incredibly difficult. Max capacity is 20. Pair the crossbow with a solid melee weapon, like the firefighter axe.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Only shoot when fully aimed at the head or legs. With the long reload, every shot has to count. Against crowds, switch to a melee weapon. Grab your bolts immediately after a kill — don't wait for the fight to end. The crossbow is a weapon for patient, precise players.
The most powerful firearm in the game — available after getting the shovel
The shotgun is the absolute damage king of Sons of the Forest. Two ammo types: buckshot (sprays a cloud of pellets, dealing 180+ damage to cannibals and 70 to mutants) and slugs (work like a standard bullet, much lower damage). Buckshot is only effective at point-blank range — beyond 7 meters, the pellets spread too wide. Holds 8 shells, pump action takes 1.5 seconds (3 seconds with an item in your left hand). Full reload — 5 seconds. Can mount a laser sight and flashlight. Solafite upgrade only changes the color, not the damage.
🔧 Stats
| Buckshot vs cannibals | 180+ |
| Buckshot vs mutants | 70 |
| Slugs | Low damage (not recommended) |
| Primary ammo | Buckshot |

| Pale Blind Mutant (400–450 HP) | 6 – 7 |
| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 5 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 6 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Only use buckshot — slugs deal pitiful damage. Take the shotgun into the most dangerous caves. Don't waste buckshot on regular cannibals. Once Virginia stops being afraid of you, hand her the shotgun — she fires it with unlimited ammo and is surprisingly effective.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Close in to 1–2 meters and only fire when all the pellets will connect. Right after shooting, step back during the pump action (1.5 seconds), then close in again and fire. Don't stand still — the enemy shouldn't be able to land a hit. One point-blank shot often tears a limb off a cannibal and sends them flying several meters back.
Available after getting the shovel — found in a buried bunker
The compound bow is an upgraded version of the crafted bow with increased damage and accuracy. Uses the same three arrow types: stone (30 damage), printed (45 damage), and carbon fiber (52.5 damage). Mutant damage: 15, 22.5, and 26.2 respectively. To deal maximum damage, you must fully draw the bowstring. Useless in caves — the flashlight gets put away while aiming, same as the crafted bow. Cannot be upgraded with solafite. Has a built-in sight for aiming.
🔧 Stats

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 20 | 14 | 12 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 27 | 18 | 16 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Always draw the bowstring all the way back — otherwise your damage drops significantly. This weapon shreds everything on the surface, but for dark mutant-filled caves, bring a shotgun or a solid melee weapon instead.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Same approach as the crafted bow: keep your distance (5+ meters), aim for the legs (cripples for ~6 seconds), then finish with headshots using your best arrows. Against groups, hit each one in the legs to control the crowd. Stick to the surface with this one — for caves, bring something heavier.
Elite weapons available closer to the endgame. Found in the most dangerous bunkers and require full gear. The katana is the king of melee combat, and the rifle is the only weapon with an optical scope. With this arsenal, you can clear any cave and tackle the final missions.
The best melee weapon in the game — found in a tough bunker near the endgame
The katana is an elegant, powerful, and lightning-fast weapon that outclasses every other melee option across the board. High damage (32.7, 49 after upgrade), blistering speed (120 hits per minute), and long reach make it the ideal choice. Weak block, but speed and range make up for it — enemies simply don't have time to swing back. One of the highest limb-severing chances in the game: against cannibals, limbs fly off after just 2–3 hits to the same spot. Upgrades with 6 solafite — strongly recommended to do this immediately after acquiring it.
🔧 Stats
| Normal hit | 32.7 damage |
| Upgraded hit (6 solafite) | 49 damage |
| Damage vs mutants (normal | upgraded) | 32.7 | 49 |
| Hits per minute | ≈120 |

| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 10 | 7 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 13 | 9 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Upgrade the katana with 6 solafite the moment you get it — damage jumps from 32.7 to 49, making it several times deadlier. Watch your stamina on higher difficulties — it drains fast during long attack flurries. Don't trade hits face-to-face — use your speed and mobility, circle behind enemies.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Wait for the enemy to wind up an attack. Dodge it and immediately counter — unleash a long, rapid flurry before they recover. Hit the same spot repeatedly (head, leg, arm) — after 2–3 hits the limb comes off. Against large mutants that can't be stunned, be cautious: they can still swing back even mid-combo. Circle around, keep dodging, never stand still. This is a weapon for an aggressive, high-mobility playstyle — stay on the move and don't give enemies room to breathe.
The only weapon with an optical scope — available in the late game
The rifle is a bolt-action long-range weapon with the game's only optical scope and red dot sight. Deals 100 damage to cannibals and 35 to mutants — less than the crossbow. Uses extremely rare rifle rounds that are nearly impossible to find in decent quantities. 5-round magazine. Bolt cycling after each shot — 3 seconds, full reload — 5 seconds. Headshot multiplier is 2.8x. No attachments can be mounted. Upgrades with 6 solafite, but damage doesn't increase — only the color changes. Flashlight gets put away while aiming, same as the bows — awkward in caves.

| Pale Blind Mutant (400–450 HP) | 12 – 13 |
| Caterpillar (300 HP) | 9 |
| Armsy (400 HP) | 12 |
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
💡 Key Tip
Conserve ammo — use only in extreme situations. Rifle rounds are the rarest ammo type in the game. Check cave corners and suspicious spots — sometimes rounds are just lying on the ground, not in crates. Avoid using it against mutants altogether — you'll burn through precious ammo for little damage. Use the katana or shotgun for mutants instead.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
Stay at least 5 meters away and place your shots precisely — aim for the legs, lower back, or head. Most cannibals drop from a single headshot. The rifle is useless against crowds — the bolt action is far too slow. This is a weapon for single, precise long-range shots, not active combat. Always carry a melee weapon as backup.
