Heavy Weapons Company in Hearts of Iron IV

In plain terms: what Heavy Weapons Company is in regimental support, why to use it, whether you need it — and how it differs from Engineer Company in defense.

What is Heavy Weapons Company

In HoI4, Heavy Weapons Company is not a Support Company on the left — it is regimental support: a slot under a battalion column. The game also has Motorized Heavy Weapons Company — same idea, but with trucks.

The difference from engineers, artillery, and Recon Company is simple: a Support Company is one per division (shared left column). Heavy Weapons Company is for a specific regiment (column), and only if it already has at least 3 battalions.

It does not add combat width. One regimental support slot per column.

Why Heavy Weapons Company is useful

To boost defense of a specific infantry column with machine guns and mortars. This is not artillery or anti-tank — the company is about holding the line, not breaking through.

  • Defense bonus. With Support Weapons II and beyond, Heavy Weapons Company gets +15% defense per technology level (II, III, IV). At level IV — up to +45% defense for the company itself.
  • Defense focus. The main value is protection. Breakthrough on the regular version also grows with upgrade level, but the slot exists so the column holds defense better.
  • No width cost. Strengthens the regiment without inflating combat width.
  • Cheap equipment. 30 infantry equipment and 5 support equipment — no artillery or tanks.

In short: Heavy Weapons Company is "heavy weapons under the regiment" that boosts column defense, not entrenchment or terrain.

Should you add Heavy Weapons Company

Not mandatory — but not trash either. It is a second-tier template upgrade.

  • Yes — if Support Companies are already filled, the column is "thick" (3+ battalions), and the regimental support slot is free. Especially on defensive lines.
  • No — if the division still lacks engineers, artillery, Recon Company, or anti-tank. Support Companies always come first.
  • No — if the column is thin (1–2 battalions): the regimental support slot will not unlock.
  • Not instead of engineers. Engineer Company covers the whole division — entrenchment and terrain. Heavy Weapons Company is a column add-on, not a replacement.

Rule for beginners: Support Companies first, then — if a regimental support slot remains — Heavy Weapons Company.

When and who to use it on

  • Defensive infantry — yes. A "thick" column holding the line: Heavy Weapons Company raises defense well.
  • Assault / tank column — usually no. Breakthrough and firepower matter more there — field guns, for example — not another defensive layer.
  • Motorized column — sometimes. Motorized Heavy Weapons Company, if you have trucks and the column is fast — but its breakthrough grows weaker with upgrade level (+5% instead of +15%).
  • Garrison — optional. If the column is already built and the slot is free — you can; low priority.

How to get Heavy Weapons Company

  1. Research Support Weapons I. Unlocks Heavy Weapons Company and Motorized Heavy Weapons Company.
  2. Upgrade II–IV for defense. Each Support Weapons level gives Heavy Weapons Company another +15% defense.
  3. Build a column with 3+ battalions. Without this, the regimental support slot will not appear.
  4. Add the company under the column. In the designer — under the target regiment, after Support Companies are in place.
Heavy Weapons Company base stats
Parameter Value
Designer location Regimental support (under column)
Slot requirement ≥ 3 battalions in column
Combat width 0
Manpower 240
Equipment 30 infantry equipment + 5 support equipment
Organization 20
Defense (with upgrade level II–IV) +15% per level, up to +45% at IV

How effective is Heavy Weapons Company

Effectiveness is in column defense, not damage or entrenchment. The company itself hits weakly (support stats are trimmed) — the value is in the defense bonus.

Where it shines

  • Defensive columns. Noticeable defense gain with upgrade level.
  • Cheap slot. Infantry + support equipment, no artillery.
  • No width cost. Strengthens the regiment "for free" in width terms.
  • After Support Companies. Logical add-on when the base is covered.

Where it falls short

  • Offense. Not a replacement for artillery or tanks.
  • No entrenchment. Does not dig in — defense grows, fortification does not.
  • Thin columns. Needs 3+ battalions — too early to add otherwise.
  • Before upgrade II. Without Support Weapons II+ there is almost no defense bonus.

Heavy Weapons Company vs Engineer Company: defense

Both help hold the line, but in different ways. Engineers are a Support Company for the whole division. Heavy Weapons Company is regimental — only under one column.

Heavy Weapons Company vs Engineer Company in defense
Parameter Engineer Company Heavy Weapons Company
Placement Support Companies (whole division) Regimental support (one column)
Entrenchment Yes (+2 fortification) No
Base defense +10% Up to +45% with upgrade level IV (+15% per level)
Terrain Forest, rivers, forts, marsh No terrain bonuses
Priority Almost always first After Support Companies, if slot remains
Defense verdict More universal: entrenchment + terrain Stronger raw column defense, but narrower

In short: engineers are excellent for any combat division: entrenchment and terrain work everywhere. Heavy Weapons Company is an add-on to a "thick" defensive column when engineers are already in and you need to push defense further on that specific regiment.

What this looks like in practice

  1. Build the division: battalions → Support Companies (engineers, artillery, Recon Company…).
  2. Research Support Weapons I; upgrade II–IV when possible.
  3. When a defensive column already has 3+ battalions and the regimental support slot is free — add Heavy Weapons Company.
  4. Usually skip it on assault and tank columns.

Practical rule: Support Companies → regimental Heavy Weapons if slot remains → defense only.

Tips

  • Do not confuse with Support Companies. Heavy Weapons Company is regimental, under the column. It is not in the shared left column.
  • Engineers first. Without them the division is bare; Heavy Weapons Company will not replace entrenchment.
  • Upgrade Support Weapons. Without II–IV the company gives almost no defense.
  • Do not expect breakthrough. The slot is for defense — do not spend it on offensive templates.

Bottom line

Heavy Weapons Company is regimental support focused on defense: machine guns and mortars under the column, up to +45% defense with the full Support Weapons branch. A decent slot, but not first: add after Support Companies when the column has 3+ battalions and a regimental support slot remains. Engineers are more universal (entrenchment + terrain); Heavy Weapons Company is stronger in raw defense of a specific regiment. Short answer for beginners: engineers first; Heavy Weapons Company on a defensive column if the slot is free.
