Maintenance Company in Hearts of Iron IV

In plain terms: what the Maintenance Company gives, when it is worth adding to a division, when to skip it — and why you should still research it for the staff.

What is a Maintenance Company

In Hearts of Iron IV, a division is built from parts: infantry, artillery, support, and so on. The Maintenance Company is a support company with mechanics and technicians. Its job is not to “hit harder than everyone” — it repairs equipment on the march and picks up enemy gear after victories.

In the designer it sits under Support Companies. It adds no combat width. One company of this type per division.

Why you need a Maintenance Company

Because in HoI4, equipment breaks and is lost not only from direct damage. Low reliability and long wars “eat” tanks and trucks even in the rear. The Maintenance Company is built for exactly that.

  • Reliability bonus. The division loses equipment less often from breakdowns and attrition — especially noticeable on tanks and mechanized units.
  • Equipment capture. After successful battles you more often take enemy equipment — you can refill your divisions with foreign tanks.
  • Cheap in equipment. Only support equipment is needed — no trucks, unlike signal or Logistics Company.
  • No width cost. Boosts equipment survivability without bloating combat width.

This is not artillery or engineers: the company barely raises soft attack and does not dig trenches. Its value is in reliability and capture, not in breakthrough.

In practice, on regular line infantry it often does not pay off: rifles are cheap, and the slot is better spent on engineers, artillery, or Recon Company. It starts to make sense on templates with expensive equipment or when you deliberately play for capturing enemy equipment.

Separately: researching Maintenance Company I is still worth it (if the army staff template is available), to slot Maintenance Planning Staff in it. Research ≠ “put maintenance on every infantry division.”

When and for whom you need a Maintenance Company

  • Tanks / mechs / SPG — sometimes yes. Reliability and equipment capture really show there. Especially in a long war.
  • Minor against a tank major — sometimes yes. Classic case: few own tanks, but you can farm enemy ones after victories.
  • Army staff — research is useful. Maintenance Company I unlocks Maintenance Planning Staff for the staff template.
  • Regular line infantry — usually no. Weak slot for beginners: engineers, artillery, Recon Company, and anti-tank first.
  • Garrison / rear — no. Neither capture nor in-combat equipment repair is needed there.

Short answer for beginners: do not add a Maintenance Company to everyone. Cover the template’s basics first. If a slot remains and the division has lots of equipment — then yes.

How to get a Maintenance Company in a division

Three steps:

  1. Open Support Companies research and take Maintenance Company I. You first need the basic support technology that unlocks support equipment. Then in the company tree — Maintenance Company I. It unlocks the company itself and, for staff, Maintenance Planning Staff. Maintenance Company II–IV come next — if you already use the company and want stronger reliability and capture.
  2. Set production of support equipment. The company needs 25 support equipment per division. No trucks required.
  3. Add to the designer for the divisions that need it. In a division: if the template has equipment and a free slot. In staff: Maintenance Planning Staff, when the staff template is available.

Combat width 0
Manpower 500
Equipment 25 support equipment
Organization 20
Reliability bonus +5%
Equipment capture +5%

There is also an armored maintenance company (separate research, late game): more capture, less reliability, plus equipment recovery and a bonus to equipment durability. It requires armored support vehicles — for most countries that is already an endgame niche.

How effective is a Maintenance Company

Maintenance pays off in reliability and capture, not damage. On pure infantry, +5% reliability and +5% capture are barely felt. On a tank division in a long war — more noticeable: fewer “silent” losses and more trophies.

Where it shines

  • Tanks, mechs, SPG. Expensive equipment is the main client for the reliability bonus.
  • Minor vs tank major. Capture helps refill the pool without your own industry.
  • Cheap equipment. Only support equipment — simpler than signal or Logistics Company.
  • Staff. Research unlocks maintenance staff for the army staff template.

Where it falls short

  • Regular infantry. Often useless — the slot is needed for engineers/artillery/Recon Company.
  • Damage and trenches. It does not fight or dig on its own.
  • Does not fix supply. Hunger and supplies — Logistics Company, not maintenance.
  • Armored version. Expensive and late — not a priority for most players.

Maintenance Company by role

Maintenance Company rating by role
Role Rating Comment
Tank / mechanized divisions Good Reliability and capture work on equipment
Minor against a tank major Good You can farm enemy tanks
Staff: maintenance planning staff Excellent Main reason many players with staff research the tech
Regular line infantry Weak Often unnecessary — take engineers/artillery/Recon Company
Early line / minor without equipment Weak Nothing to “spin” capture and reliability on
Garrison with no combat Weak Do not add it

What this looks like in practice

  1. Open Support Companies research.
  2. Research Maintenance Company I — including for staff: Maintenance Planning Staff.
  3. Do not add maintenance to regular infantry divisions — engineers, artillery, and Recon Company first.
  4. In a tank or mechanized template — if a slot is free and support equipment is in stock.

Practical rule for beginners: research — yes (for staff), mass infantry — no; tanks and trophy scenarios — case by case.

Recommendations

  • Do not confuse with Logistics Company. Maintenance — reliability and capture. Supplies and fuel — Logistics Company.
  • Research for staff. Maintenance Company I unlocks maintenance staff in the staff template.
  • Do not put it on all infantry. For the line, engineers, artillery, and Recon Company matter more.
  • Do not expect artillery from it. It is about equipment, not soft attack and trenches.

Bottom line

The Maintenance Company gives a reliability bonus and equipment capture. For regular infantry it is often unnecessary — especially for beginners. It makes sense on templates with equipment and in scenarios where you deliberately farm trophies. Maintenance Company I is worth researching: it unlocks Maintenance Planning Staff for the army staff. Short answer for beginners: infantry — usually no; research for staff — yes; tanks and trophy wars — yes, if a slot is free.
