Food & Water in Sons of the Forest
Everything about survival: hunger, thirst, cooking, hunting, fishing, mushrooms, berries, winter, lifehacks.
⚙️ Basic Mechanics
Hunger and thirst are scales from 0 to 100. Together with sleep, they determine your maximum stamina pool. If even one stat is at zero, stamina drops proportionally. Example: hunger 0%, thirst 100%, sleep 100% = 70% stamina. At 0% across all three — the character will start losing health.
The golden rule: stamina = the minimum of (hunger, thirst, sleep). Keep all three above 50% — and you'll never have stamina problems.
💧 Water
Water comes in two types: dirty (all bodies of water except the ocean) and clean (boiled or rainwater). You can't drink from the sea. One sip of clean water restores 50% thirst.
🔥 How to Boil Water
- Find a pot in tent camps, e.g. near the Modern Axe
- Fill the pot from a body of water (hold E)
- Light a campfire
- Place the pot on the fire
- Press the gear icon — otherwise it won't boil
- Wait 1 min 25 sec
The lid fell off the pot = it's done. You can take it with you.
📦 Water Containers
| Pot | 4 sips |
| Flask (3D printer, 100ml ink) | 2 sips |
| Total carried | 6 sips |
6 sips = 3 full thirst restorations.
🌧 Rain Collector
Collects rainwater. Place 3–4 units at your base — and you'll always have water. Fills with ice in winter, which cannot be melted.
🥤 Soda
Restores +50 water and +20 sleep. Commonly found in camps and caves. An excellent emergency source. A lifesaver in winter if you're far from a river.
🥫 Ready-to-Eat Food
Found food requires no cooking. Scattered across camps, caves, and crates. If you enable item respawning in the difficulty settings — everything comes back after reloading the save.
Important: canned food can only be opened with a can opener (found in some tent camps). Without it, the can is useless. Dry ramen and cereal drain water — don't eat them without a water supply.
🫐 Berries, Mushrooms, Plants
Grow all over the island in forests and clearings. How to tell safe from poisonous: green name in inventory = safe, yellow/red = poisoning.

Yarrow, Chicory, Fireweed, Balsam Root, Aloe, Horsetail, Devil's Club.
Used in craft mixes and soup cooking.
🏡 Garden Beds & Respawn Bug
Berries and mushrooms can be planted in garden beds. One bed = 3 items per harvest. You can place as many beds as you want. Bug: harvest the crop, leave your base for 1–3 minutes, come back — berries are back on the beds. Works only for berries.
🥩 Meat & Fish
Meat is the main food source. Obtained from almost all animals. Meat type doesn't matter: a rabbit piece and a moose piece give the same fullness, you just get more from a moose.
Raw
+10 food, +5 water
Spoils in: 58 min
Fried
+50 food
Spoils in: 174 min
Dried
+50 food, -10 water
Spoils in: 348 min
Rotten meat: -20 HP, +10 food. Poisoning is cured with medication.
🔥 Frying on a Campfire
- 32 seconds — done
- 64 seconds — burns to charcoal
- Raw = red, fried = dark brown
- Rotten = pale and dry
- Tip: always fry before eating
🫴 Drying on a Rack
- 58 minutes until done
- 6 slots per drying rack
- Doesn't spoil while hanging
- Removing and rehanging = timer resets
- Protection: scarecrow for birds, fence for cannibals
🍖 Cannibalism
Raw limb: +10 food, +5 water, -5 HP. Fried limb: +50 food, +5 poisoning. No hidden debuffs. Kelvin and Virginia don't react.
🏹 Hunting & Fishing
🎯 Best Hunting Weapons
| Crossbow | 1 bolt = any animal |
| Bow / Spear | Small: 1 hit. Deer/Moose: flee |
| Pistol | Overkill, loud |
Crossbow is ideal: retrievable bolts, silent, 100% kill rate.
👁 Detection Mechanics
- Animals have a vision cone around them
- Enter the cone — they spook and flee
- They don't detect scent
- No blind spots
- Leaf armor reduces detection
- Headshot — bonus damage
- Leg shot — no effect
🪤 Traps
Animal trap: catches rabbits, squirrels, raccoons. Moose, deer, turtles, and birds don't get caught.
Fish trap: place in a river or lake. Works passively — leave, return, collect. No time limit.
🐢 Turtle Eggs
Turtle emerges from the sea → crawls onto the beach → lays eggs → leaves. Hatchlings emerge and run to the water. You can collect the eggs before they hatch. A hatchling may emerge from an egg in your inventory. One egg = +5 food, +5 water.
🐟 Fishing
No fishing rod. Spear fish in the water. Or order Kelvin to get food — he'll bring 1 fish. Fish trap — passive method. All fish are identical: 1 piece, +10 food, +5 water (raw).
🦪 Oysters
Found in ocean shallows. One oyster = +10 food, +7 water. Eaten raw, no penalties. A good water source in coastal areas.
🍲 Pot Soups
The pot lets you cook not just water, but also 12 kinds of soup. How to cook: place the pot on a campfire, select a recipe with the gear icon — ingredients are automatically taken from your inventory.
Numbers: food and water = restoration percentages (scale 0–100). HP = health points. Energy and sleep = restoration percentages of the respective bars.
🧪 Craft Mixes (in Inventory)
Combined in the inventory from plants. No campfire or pot required. 4 recipes:
⚡ Energy Mix
Balsam Root + Chicory
Restores stamina.
⚡ Energy Mix +
Fireweed + Devil's Club + Chicory
Enhanced version.
💚 Healing Mix
Aloe + Yarrow
Restores health.
💚 Healing Mix +
Aloe + Fireweed + Horsetail
Enhanced version.
❄️ Winter
Survival gets harder in winter. Water availability changes, vegetation disappears, but hunting becomes easier — Best Base Locations.
🚫 What Stops Working
- Lakes freeze — can't collect water
- Rain collectors fill with ice (can't melt)
- Berries and plants don't produce
- Snow cannot be melted
✅ What Still Works
- Rivers don't freeze — water is available
- Animals don't disappear
- Meat on drying racks doesn't spoil
- Soda — emergency water source
- Lake ice is completely reliable
🏔 Winter Hunting — Easier Than Summer
Lakes turn into open ice fields. Animals (especially deer) often come out onto the ice to rest — spotting and shooting them is much easier. Use a crossbow — one bolt kills any animal, and the bolt can be retrieved.
Tip: if your base is far from a river — stock up on soda for winter. A pot of water left at your base doesn't freeze — you can store water right in it.
👥 Kelvin & Virginia
Both companions interact with food. They are immune to hunger and thirst — you don't need to feed them. But they can help or harm your supplies.
🧑🔧 Kelvin
- "Get food" command — brings 1 fish
- Can catch fish even in fishless water
- Eats meat from drying racks — 1 piece at a time
- Can't die from hunger or thirst
👩 Virginia
- Brings rabbit and squirrel carcasses as gifts
- Gift timing — random
- Eats meat from drying racks — 1 piece at a time
- Can't die from hunger or thirst
Important: if you have multiple drying racks with meat — companions only take 1 piece at a time, they won't empty everything. Place extra drying racks so there's enough food for everyone.
⚠️ Beginner Mistakes
1. Forgetting to press the gear icon when boiling
You put the pot on the fire — and wait. But the water never boils. You have to press the glowing gear icon, otherwise the pot just sits on the fire. The lid should bounce from the steam.
2. Carrying a full inventory of raw meat
Raw meat spoils in 58 minutes. A beginner spends time hunting, fills their inventory — and half rots before they get back to base. Fry it or hang it on a drying rack immediately.
3. Drinking a sip when thirst is nearly full
One sip = +50% thirst. Drinking at 80% wastes 30%. Sips can't be split. Wait until thirst drops to 50% or lower.
4. Building a campfire with no roof in the rain
Without a roof, a campfire burns for 2 minutes. In rain or snow — 1 minute. You might not have time to fry meat or boil water. Put a roof over your campfire.
5. Not protecting drying racks from birds and cannibals
Meat on drying racks can be eaten by birds or stolen by cannibals. Place a scarecrow for birds and build a palisade around your base for cannibals.
💡 Lifehacks & Secrets
🫐 Berry Respawn Bug on Garden Beds
Harvest your garden beds → leave your base for 1–3 minutes → come back. Berries are back. Works only for berries, not mushrooms. Gives you an infinite food source without hunting.
🏹 Crossbow — King of Hunting
One bolt kills any animal. Bolts can be retrieved from the carcass — infinite ammo. Silent — won't scare nearby animals. Far more effective than bows or spears.
🌧 4 Rain Collectors = Infinite Water
Place 3–4 rain collectors at your base — you simply won't be able to drink all the water between rains. Forget trips to the river with a pot. Doesn't work in winter.
🥩 Drying Rack = Eternal Storage
Meat on a drying rack never spoils. Dried meat lasts 348 minutes (nearly 6 hours) in your inventory. Hang all your meat on the rack right after hunting — it'll wait for you.
🫐 Eat Berries on the Move
Pick berries straight from bushes while traveling. Hunger drains slower, inventory stays free. Eating from inventory is faster than from the bush — pick first, then eat.
