Army Experience for Divisions

Army Experience in Hearts of Iron IV: what it is, how to farm it, and where to spend it
The country resource for division templates and land doctrines — without mixing it up with Veterans on the map.
Quick take
Two kinds of experience. Do not mix them up. Division experience is how battle-hardened that one division is: from green rookies to Veterans. Army Experience is a separate country stockpile — like a currency. You spend it when you change a division’s makeup and when you unlock land doctrines.
Why you need it. Want to add artillery, engineers, or more infantry to a division? You almost always need Army Experience. Without it, the Division Designer will not let you save the change. A country cannot hold more than 500 of this resource.
How to get it. Real combat gives the most. Before the war, put divisions on Exercise (the country only gets about 0.08 Army Experience per day from exercises), and take the focuses and ministers that help. Want it faster? Send a Military Attaché to a country already at war: you get a share of their Army Experience (usually 15%). Players often attach to China or Japan. Sending Volunteers to Spain is also a very strong early option.
Where to spend it. First build a simple template that can actually hold the line. Then a breakthrough template if you plan to attack. Pick the doctrine that boosts how you already fight. Do not hoard XP “just in case up to the cap,” and do not dump everything into one perfect template while you still have nothing to put on the map.
What it is
Army Experience is a country counter, not a per-division one. In the UI it sits next to Air and Navy Experience. You earn it from combat, exercises, and a few other sources, and you spend it in the Division Designer and on land doctrines.
Almost every new player mixes it up with division experience. Division experience answers “how leveled is this specific division?” — Veterans, for example. Army Experience answers “does the country have enough resource to rebuild templates and buy a doctrine?”
| Army Experience | Division experience | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Country resource | Level of one division |
| What it affects | Templates, doctrines, some decisions | That division’s combat performance |
| Cap | 500 in the country stockpile | Steps up to Veterans |
Why you need it
Almost the whole path of “make a division for a real job” runs into Army Experience. A new template, an extra regiment column, a support company, upgrading divisions already in the field to a new makeup — all of that is paid with Army Experience. The other big sink is land doctrine: without it, the template often misses the point of why you built it.
If you are short on XP, you are not “bad at the meta” — you simply cannot afford the edit you want. So farming and spending Army Experience is not a side topic. It is part of the country’s division economy.
How to farm Army Experience
Sources differ in speed and cost. Treat them as a toolkit, not as one “correct” method.
| Source | What it does in practice |
|---|---|
| Division combat | The main honest stream. The livelier the land front, the faster the resource climbs. |
| Exercise | Works before the war and in quiet stretches. From exercises the country gets at most about 0.08 Army Experience per day. Burns equipment and adds attrition. |
| Military Attaché | You take a share of the host country’s Army Experience (base 15%). Strong if they let you attach to a fighting ally — or a “neutral” war elsewhere. |
| Focuses and ministers | One-off or ongoing boosts. Often cover the start before the big war. |
| Lend-Lease | If an ally fights with your equipment, some Army Experience can come back to you. |
How to spend Army Experience wisely
Officially the resource goes into division templates and land doctrines. In practice, order beats “perfect meta”:
- A working line template and 1–2 support companies — without them the division on the map is useless.
- An assault template if you actually plan to push.
- Doctrine pieces that immediately boost your role — not the whole tree “because it looks nice.”
- Only then — designer cosmetics and extra columns “for later.”
Bottom line: Army Experience is for changing divisions and buying doctrines — do not confuse it with Veterans on the map. Save it for the next job: a simple frontline template beats a perfect blueprint and a stockpile “to 500.” Short on XP? Earn it through combat, Exercise, or an attaché — then thicken the template.
