What Is Combat Width in Hearts of Iron 4

\n

In simple terms: how combat width works, why you shouldn't cram too many divisions into one tile, and how to avoid penalties.

📏 What Is Combat Width

\n

Combat width is the amount of space available for fighting during a battle. If your division exceeds the tile's limit, part of it simply won't fit into the fight, and your attack or defense will be weakened. It's commonly referred to as CW.

\n

The limit depends on terrain (plains, mountains, forest, etc.) and determines how many divisions can effectively fight at the same time. Only battalions affect combat width — support companies and regiments do not.

\n
\n\n
\n

⚠️ What Happens When You Exceed the Limit

\n

When you go over the limit, divisions suffer a penalty to soft attack, hard attack, breakthrough, and defense. The bigger the excess, the weaker your punch. Additionally, divisions that don't fit into the battle gain no experience.

\n

Example: you're attacking on plains (limit of 80) with three divisions of 30 width each. That's 90 total — 10 over the limit. The efficiency penalty will be around 19%.

🛠️ How to Manage Combat Width

\n

You can reduce battalion combat width through certain doctrines. That's one of the few ways to directly affect CW.

\n

Also, try to pick suitable terrain for your divisions: don't send tanks into mountains. And, of course, build top-tier division templates. Check out our guide on the best division templates, where we break down the designer and give ready-made meta setups.
