Division air attack

Division Air Attack in Hearts of Iron IV

In simple terms: how AA in a template saves you from CAS, how many AA guns you need, and why one support company is often better than ten battalions.

📌 At a Glance

  • Air attack is your division’s AA: protection from CAS and reduction of the enemy air superiority penalty.
  • It shoots down planes on ground support, cuts their damage (up to a 75% reduction cap), and partially counters the air superiority penalty.
  • It does not replace fighters and does not protect factories from strategic bombers.
  • The basic way to get it: research AA → produce AA guns → add an AA support company to the template.
  • For most divisions, one AA support company is enough; line AA / SPAA are needed when the enemy truly dominates the sky.

🧠 What Division Air Attack Is

Division air attack in HoI4 isn’t “damage to infantry from the sky.” It’s the ability of your division to fire back with AA guns and SPAA at enemy planes over its own battle.

Without this stat, a division under CAS simply takes extra damage to organization and HP, plus feels enemy air superiority more harshly. With air attack, the division survives longer under bombing and suffers a bit less penalty to defense/breakthrough when the sky is hostile.

📊 What Exactly Air Attack Does

Three effects – and all three matter in different ways.

  • Reduces damage from CAS. CAS strikes divisions in battle; air attack lowers this damage up to a 75% cap. One decent AA support company often already covers almost the whole damage reduction cap.
  • Shoots down planes over the battle. The division’s AA fires at planes that are attacking this specific battle. The higher the total air attack of all participants, the more losses the enemy air force takes.
  • Reduces the air superiority penalty. When the sky is enemy‑held, the division gets a penalty to defense while defending and to breakthrough while attacking (base up to −35%). Air attack partially counters this penalty, but with diminishing returns.

What division AA does NOT do: it does not protect factories from strategic bombers; does not replace your own fighters in the region; does not fix supply. For factories you need static AA batteries (buildings) in the region.

🛠️ How to Raise Air Attack – Step by Step for Beginners

  1. Research AA in the artillery branch (1936 → 1940 → 1943). Without the research, you can’t add the company and have nothing to produce.
  2. Put AA guns into production. They’re cheap steel equipment; a support company needs only 20 guns per division.
  3. Add an “AA Support” company to the template. This is the most efficient way. The company does not cost combat width and barely slows the division.
  4. Upgrade the AA guns themselves. Base air attack values: AA 1936 – 19, 1940 – 25, 1943 – 32. The support company has a −20% penalty, so in the designer you’ll see roughly 15/20/26.

📈 If the Enemy Is Choking You from the Air – Reinforce Precisely

MethodWhen to UseDownside
AA Support CompanyAlmost always on the frontTakes a support slot
Line AA BattalionWhen you need to kill more planes / also need some piercingEats combat width and production
Motorized AAMotorized/tank divisions to avoid cutting speedRequires trucks
SPAA (Self‑Propelled AA)Offensive tank templatesExpensive, needs a tank designer

Put AA on the whole mass of the front, not on one “elite” division. In battle, protection from air damage looks at the average air attack of all participants, including reserves.

🎯 Ready‑Made Benchmarks

  • Infantry vs. AI: one AA support company per division is an excellent standard, especially from 1939 onward.
  • Multiplayer / lots of CAS: AA support is almost mandatory; on key tanks – support + SPAA or an AA module.
  • Early war with no enemy air force: you can delay it, but re‑training a template in 1940 is cheaper than having divisions without AA under a carpet of CAS.

As a bonus, AA guns also give hard attack and piercing. For a minor nation without proper AT, early AA can sometimes act as a “poor man’s anti‑tank” as well.

⚖️ Pros and Cons of High Air Attack

✅ Pros

  • Divisions crumble less under CAS.
  • The enemy loses planes over your battles.
  • The enemy air superiority penalty bites softer.
  • A cheap way to survive while your own fighters catch up.

❌ Cons

  • The support slot competes with engineers, artillery, logistics, recon.
  • Line AA and SPAA are expensive in width/factories if you overdo them.
  • Doesn’t cure strategic bombing and doesn’t replace your air force.

❓ Common Questions

For reducing CAS damage – usually yes. More makes sense if you want to kill more planes or the enemy completely owns the sky.

No. For cities and factories, build static AA batteries in the region and scramble fighters.

First, an AA support company. If you can’t spare the slot and have a designer, mount an AA gun on the chassis or build a separate SPAA. It’s best not to shove towed line AA into fast tanks.

Either only some divisions have AA (dragging the average down), or the sky is completely enemy‑held with an overwhelming number of CAS, or the AA guns are outdated. Upgrade the equipment and cover the front en masse, not just in a few spots.

🏁 One‑Liner Summary

Air attack is an umbrella over your infantry and tanks: one AA company saves from bombs, and having it everywhere saves the whole front.
