Division reconnaissance

Division Reconnaissance in Hearts of Iron IV

In simple terms: how recon helps you pick better tactics, why one point of recon is worth a general’s skill, and why cavalry recon is underrated.

📌 At a Glance

  • Division recon in HoI4 helps pick more favorable combat tactics.
  • The side with a recon advantage seizes the initiative more often.
  • 1 point of recon advantage roughly equals 5 levels of commander skill for tactic selection.
  • Each point of recon gives about +7.5% to land intel gathered from that battle.
  • The main source is a recon company; a second recon company of the same type cannot be added.

🧠 What Division Recon Is

Division recon in HoI4 isn’t about «fog of war» across the whole map. It’s a stat for a specific template: whoever reads the battle better pulls favorable tactics more often.

In combat, recon competes against the enemy’s recon and the commanders’ skills. The side with the higher combined value seizes initiative more often and can counter enemy tactics instead of just swallowing them.

📊 The Hidden Weight of Recon

A rarely discussed but crucial number: a recon advantage is extremely heavy. Roughly 1 extra point of recon is worth as much as 5 levels of commander skill when choosing tactics – that’s why a recon company often beats a «better» general if the divisions have no recon.

A second hidden effect – intel. Each point of division recon gives about +7.5% to land intel gathered from that battle: long fronts with recon in the templates slowly light up the enemy better than bare divisions.

📈 Where the Stat Comes From in the Designer

Almost always from a support company. Combat battalions themselves barely provide recon – without a recon company, ordinary infantry usually has a blank stat.

CompanyReconNote
Cavalry Recon1Cheap, early, plus a soft attack buff for artillery
Motorized Recon1.5Usually a weak choice
Light Armored Recon (Armored Cars)2Maximum pure recon
Armored Recon (Light Tanks)1Less recon, but stronger for tank divisions
Helicopter ReconsituationalLate-game and often excessive

An important nuance: max recon ≠ always the best company. Armored cars give 2 recon, but armored recon on light tanks (1 recon) is often better for an offensive fist thanks to bonuses to tank battalions and terrain – the recon stat isn’t the only purpose of that slot.

Only one recon company can be placed in a template. Choose based on the division’s role, not «everything at once».

🐴 Cavalry Recon Is Underrated

It’s cheap, gives 1 recon, and also provides +10% soft attack for artillery in the division – for early infantry this is often the best start.

🎖️ Commander Traits

«Trickster» gives +25% to recon, «Ambusher» – +25% but only while entrenched. These multiply an existing stat: without a recon company in the template there’s almost nothing to multiply.

⚠️ Don’t Chase Recon Over Battle Stats

Chasing recon over organization, breakthrough and supply is a mistake. The division must first know how to fight; recon determines how often the battle follows your rules rather than the enemy’s.

⚖️ Pros and Cons of High Recon

✅ Pros

  • More favorable tactics and initiative.
  • Slightly better land intel from battles.

❌ Cons

  • Occupies a valuable support slot.
  • By itself doesn’t replace damage or survivability.

❓ Common Questions

No. The division stat works in land combat and tactics. Planes are a separate story about the map and air recon.

Early/cheap infantry usually gets cavalry recon. Offensive tanks more often get armored recon on light tanks, even if the raw recon number isn’t the highest.

Desirable, but not at any cost. On the line, engineers and survivability are more important; recon is picked when a slot is already available and you want to pull tactics more consistently.

🏁 One‑Liner Summary

Division reconnaissance is the art of reading the battle: whoever has more recon fights by their own rules, and cavalry recon early on often beats the «perfect» company later.
